During last year's flu season no one who was vaccinated contracted the flu. ████ ████ █████ ███████ ██ █████ ████ ██████ ███ ████ ███████████ ██ ████ ███ ██████ ████ ██ ███ ████████ ██ █████ ████ ██████ ████ ████████ ███ ████

Objective: Parallel Questions

Parallel questions have a highly regimented theory and approach – even if your core logical intuitions are very strong, following a routine process specifically built around the LSAT’s unique patterns will dramatically reduce the time and mental energy required to identify the correct answer. So review these lessons. They’re important.

In short, though, our approach will be to develop an abstract model of the stimulus’ argument, preserving the structure but not the subject matter, then take a shallow dip into the answer choices looking for structural mismatches. Usually that suffices to identify the correct answer, but sometimes we’ll need a deep dive to distinguish between the (usually just two) answer choices that remain after our shallow dip.

Argument Summary

If you ignore the last year / this year dynamic, the argument is valid – it’s a syllogism and it looks like this:

INCOMPLETE SUMMARY
Premise 1: Vaccinated people never get the flu.
Premise 2: South High students are all vaccinated.
---------
Conclusion: No South High students will get the flu.

This core structure needs to be preserved in the answer choices.

But the last year / this year dynamic is critical. It changes the argument from a syllogism to an argument by analogy, asking us to see the future the same way we see the past:

TRUE SUMMARY
Premise 1: (Domain – Last year) Vaccinated people never got the flu.
Premise 2: (Domain – This year) South High students are all vaccinated.
---------
Conclusion: (Domain – This year) No South High students will get the flu.

So the argument isn’t valid anymore – it relies on the idea that the pattern from last year will apply this year as well. This structure also needs to be preserved in the answer choices.
