PENN STATE DICKINSON LAW
Consistent with Penn State's mission as a land-grant institution, the University operates Penn State Dickinson Law with two locations: its primary location in Carlisle, PA, and an additional location in University Park, PA. Our locations operate as a single law school, singularly accredited by the American Bar Association. Through our two locations, Penn State Dickinson Law provides a transformative legal education to students from across the U.S. and beyond. Penn State Dickinson Law's historic home and primary location in Carlisle will allow students easy access to the state capitol and provides a charming backdrop for your studies. Our additional location in University Park will enable law students to study at Penn State's largest undergraduate campus. Admitted applicants will be matched to one of the two locations as their "home location" and will be able to complete all J.D. requirements without having to relocate. Resources such as student organizations, career services, financial aid, and bar preparation support will be available in both locations. Penn State Dickinson Law students will be able to engage with peers, collaborate with faculty, and access resources from both locations.
APPLICATION FEE
To reduce the financial burden related to the law school application process, Penn State Dickinson Law has waived its application fee. Please note, however, that Penn State Dickinson Law requires all candidates to submit a CAS report, and you may be required to pay LSAC a fee for this service. Note that LSAC offers CAS waivers for eligible individuals. Additional information about CAS waiver eligibility is available on LSAC's website: https://www.lsac.org/lsat/register-lsat/lsat-cas-fees/fee-waivers-lsat-credential-assembly-service-cas.
HOLISTIC REVIEW
Penn State Dickinson Law conducts a holistic review of applications. While we put considerable emphasis on academic record and test scores, we consider them in conjunction and context with other aspects of the application.
ACADEMIC PREPARATION
Penn State Dickinson Law does not prescribe a particular course of study for undergraduate education. Rather, we consider the rigor, depth, and breadth of an academic program; grade trends; advanced coursework; and evidence of aptitude for reading, writing, and analysis. Before beginning law school, applicants must have earned, or will earn by the time of enrollment, an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university (with exception for applicants applying via an established 3+3 or accelerated program agreement between Penn State Dickinson Law and their undergraduate school).
STANDARDIZED TEST SCORES
An admissions test score is required for all applicants. Penn State Dickinson Law will accept the following admissions tests under the following conditions:
- A valid LSAT or GRE score is acceptable for all applicants; or
- SAT or ACT is accepted for Penn State - University Park undergraduate students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher over six semesters of academic work. Additionally, the SAT or ACT score exceed the 85th percentile of the composite score for the administration of the exam and be from a test taken for the purpose of undergraduate admission; or
- GMAT is accepted for applicants seeking the J.D. in combination with a graduate degree in a different discipline and with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or in the top 10% across six semesters of academic work. Additionally, the GMAT score must be in the 85th percentile or higher.
ADDITIONAL FACTORS
The Admissions Committee also considers the experience, leadership, and service of the applicant. Applicants who have overcome hardships or obstacles to education or who have had unique experiences are encouraged to share their stories. We seek applicants who will positively contribute to the law school and legal communities and support our institutional mission of diversity, intellectual engagement, and service. Penn State Dickinson Law also places significant emphasis on letters of recommendation from faculty instructors, employers, and internship supervisors.
INTEGRITY, MATURITY, AND CANDOR
Penn State Dickinson Law places high importance on the integrity, maturity, and candor of applicants. Penn State Dickinson Law reserves the right to revoke an offer of admission if the Admissions Committee determines that an applicant has engaged in behavior that brings into question their honesty, maturity, moral character, or fitness to practice law. Penn State Dickinson Law may revoke an offer of admission if the Admissions Committee determines that the applicant has provided false, incomplete, incorrect, or misleading information during the admissions process, or if new, relevant, or updated information is not provided in a timely manner. Applicants admitted to Penn State Dickinson Law are required to disclose within ten business days any event occurring after admission and prior to matriculation that would change their responses to any questions on the application, including and especially disclosure questions regarding arrests and criminal history, disciplinary action, pending criminal charges, and professional misconduct.
Admitted applicants are not required to disclose records that have been expunged or subject to limited access pursuant to Pennsylvania Act 56 of 2018, the Pennsylvania Clean Slate Law. The Pennsylvania Board of Bar Examiners, which is exempt from the Pennsylvania Clean Slate Law, may require more comprehensive disclosures.
Admitted applicants who matriculate to Penn State Dickinson Law have a continuing obligation to disclose and amend their application if they become aware that any response was inaccurate, incomplete, or omitted relevant information at the time of submission. Applicants determined by the Admissions Committee to have provided incorrect, incomplete, or misleading information in their applications may be reported to LSAC's Committee on Misconduct and Irregularities.
CHARACTER AND FITNESS
In addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness, and other qualifications for admission to the bar in every U.S. jurisdiction. Applicants are encouraged to determine the requirements for any jurisdiction for which they intend to seek admission by contacting the jurisdiction directly. Addresses for all relevant agencies are available through the National Conference of Bar Examiners: http://www.ncbex.org/.
Admission to Penn State Dickinson Law does not guarantee admission to any bar.

CITIZENSHIP
Penn State Dickinson Law is bound by ABA reporting obligations, which require us to capture citizenship data in accordance with the following categories:
- U.S. Citizen (either by birth in the U.S. or through naturalization)
- U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e., Resident Alien, Green Card holder), Asylee, or Refugee
- Nonresident Alien (neither U.S. Citizen nor U.S. Permanent Resident)
Aggregated responses to the citizenship question are published annually on Penn State Dickinson Law's Standard ABA 509 Information Report, which is available on our website: https://dickinsonlaw.psu.edu/aba-required-disclosures.
Please note that no federal law prohibits the admission of undocumented immigrants to U.S. colleges or universities, and no federal law prohibits states from allowing undocumented persons to be admitted to the bar and practice law. Accordingly, Penn State Dickinson Law welcomes applications from all qualified prospective students who seek to undertake the study of law.
ETHNICITY AND RACE
Recognizing a history when Penn State Dickinson Law overwhelmingly enrolled classes that were comprised predominately of white male students, the Law School's contemporary approach has been to adhere to holistic admissions, which neither confers nor deprives applicants of individual benefits based on their racial identity. Although Penn State Dickinson Law continues to collect ethnicity and race data on our application, our purpose in collecting this data is to conduct regular assessments of the demographics of our applicant pool. Consistent with the Supreme Court's 2023 rulings in the Harvard and UNC cases, Penn State Dickinson Law does not use a candidate's reported race and ethnicity in determining admission or denial. Indeed, the individuals who read applications and make admissions recommendations do not have access to applicants' reported race and ethnicity markers throughout the cycle.
On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the race-conscious admissions programs at Harvard College and University of North Carolina are unconstitutional. 600 U.S. 181 (2023). Although Penn State Dickinson Law collects race and ethnicity data on the application, candidate responses to these questions are suppressed so that members of our Admissions & Financial Aid team are unable to view or access an applicant's reported race and ethnicity data while reviewing applications. Penn State Dickinson Law opts to collect this data to analyze candidate pool trends in the context of historic and national data. At regular intervals throughout the application cycle, a Penn State Dickinson Law employee outside of the Office of Admissions & Financial Aid (i.e., a member of the Information Technology team) exports a data file from the applicant database that contains candidate race and ethnicity data. This employee then securely sends this data file to Penn State University's Office of Planning, Assessment, and Research (OPAIR), where University employees generate a report based on aggregate demographic information with no individually identifying candidate information. OPAIR returns these demographic reports to Penn State Dickinson Law's Dean and Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. As has been our custom and practice during each admissions cycle, Penn State Dickinson Law analyzes aggregate applicant data to conduct year-over-year historic comparisons on our applicant pool to make informed enrollment projections throughout the cycle consistent with Penn State's Land Grant mission.
Consistent with the Supreme Court's 2023 rulings in the Harvard and UNC cases, Penn State Dickinson Law will continue to conduct holistic application review to identify candidates who possess the skills to succeed in our program of legal education alongside values that align with Penn State Dickinson Law's commitment to institutional antiracism geared to fulfilling the promise of equal justice under law. Applicants are invited, though not required, to discuss how they will bring a unique perspective to Penn State Dickinson Law or how their personal, lived experiences have shaped their perspective and/or desire to join the legal profession.
As a requirement of our ABA accreditation, Penn State Dickinson Law must report ethnicity and race data on all applicants, admitted students, and matriculants. Aggregated data on race and ethnicity are published annually on Penn State Dickinson Law's Standard ABA 509 Information Report, which is available on our website: https://dickinsonlaw.psu.edu/aba-required-disclosures. Federal law requires that institutions of higher education gather the following information regarding the ethnicity and race of their students. The standard Federal Government ethnicity and racial definitions are described below:
Ethnicity Definitions
- Hispanic/Latino (Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin)
Race Definitions
- Asian (an individual having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam)
- American Indian or Alaska Native (an individual having origins in any of the original peoples of North, South, or Central America, and who maintains a tribal affiliation or community attachment)
- Black or African American (an individual having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa)
- Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (an individual having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands)
- White (an individual having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa)
Aggregated responses regarding race/ethnicity are published annually on Penn State Dickinson Law's Standard ABA 509 Information Report, which is available on our website: https://dickinsonlaw.psu.edu/aba-required-disclosures.
INTERNATIONAL AND FOREIGN-EDUCATED APPLICANTS
Penn State Dickinson Law requires that international transcripts be submitted through LSAC's Credential Assembly Service (CAS). If you completed any postsecondary work outside the U.S. (including its territories) or Canada, you must use this service for the evaluation of your foreign transcripts. The one exception to this requirement is if you completed the foreign work through a study abroad, consortium, or exchange program sponsored by a U.S. or Canadian institution and this work is clearly indicated as such on the home campus transcript. An International Credential Evaluation will be completed by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), which will be incorporated into your CAS report.
To use the Credential Assembly Service, log in to your LSAC account and follow the instructions to register for the service. Be sure to print out a Transcript Request Form for each institution and send it promptly to them. More time is usually required to receive foreign transcripts. Questions about the Credential Assembly Service can be directed to LSAC at 215.968.1001, or LSACinfo@LSAC.org.
TOEFL and IELTS scores are not required for international applicants; however, such scores may be included as part of your application. To submit a TOEFL score, you must contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and request that your TOEFL score be sent to LSAC. LSAC's TOEFL code for the Credential Assembly Service is 8395. Your score will be included in the International Credential Evaluation document that will be included in your law school report. IELTS score reports should be sent electronically to LSAC.
FINANCIAL AID
Students applying to Penn State Dickinson Law need not take any additional action to be considered for scholarship aid. If admitted, applicants will be notified of their scholarship aid in their offer of admission. Scholarships are renewable each year so long as the student remains in good academic standing, abides by the Honor Code, and is enrolled at Penn State Dickinson Law. Scholarships are not transferable to other Penn State programs or other educational institutions.
If you are applying for the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, you must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. When filing your FAFSA, please use Penn State's school code (003329) to ensure that we are able to access your data.
If you are applying for need-based institutional grant aid, you must also complete the school-specific need-based grant application available on our website after January 1. Need-based grant applications submitted by March 1 receive priority consideration, but late applications will be considered if funding remains available.
For applicants who intend to use private loans, information regarding private lenders will be shared with admitted students in the spring.
Admitted students are welcome to apply for financial aid up to the date of enrollment; however, students are strongly encouraged to submit their financial aid applications by March 1, especially if they are applying for a need-based grant or seeking federal loans.
CAMPUS SECURITY CRIME STATISTICS
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and Pennsylvania Act of 1988 require that crime statistics for Pennsylvania colleges and universities be made available to applicants upon request. Penn State's combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus, in certain off-campus buildings owned or controlled by the University, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. The report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters. You may obtain this information for the Penn State campus to which you are applying by accessing the website at www.police.psu.edu/clery/. A printed copy of the report may be obtained by writing to University Police & Public Safety, The Pennsylvania State University, Eisenhower Parking Deck, University Park, PA 16802-6703 or by calling 814-865-1864.
